We Examine And We Educate

Establishing routine eye exams is an excellent way to introduce your child to a life-long dedication to eye care. For growing children, eye health and good vision habits should start early.

At Alluminate Eyecare, not only will we examine your child’s vision and eye health, we will inform and educate them about their eyes along the way.

Clear vision is vital for most disciplines of early childhood learning, including social situations, and is advantageous for behavioral development.

Is My Child Experiencing Vision Problems?

Sometimes, it can be hard to tell.

Depending on their age, children may have difficulty communicating that their vision is blurry or they can’t differentiate colours. That’s why it’s important to pay attention: if your child is experiencing any of the following, it may be linked to eyesight problems:

  • Headaches
  • Excessive blinking and eye rubbing
  • Squinting to see far objects
  • Struggling to see near objects
  • Sitting too close to the television/device
  • Unexplained clumsiness
  • Inability to maintain eye contact

These symptoms may be related to their sight or may be due to other considerations. It is important to make an eye appointment in order to rule out any visual causes of concern.

Eye Exam Frequency

In the growing years, children require regular examinations to ensure the eyes are developing properly and functioning normally. At Alluminate Eyecare, we recommend the following eye exam schedule, based on the Canadian Association of Optometrists guidelines:

Your infant should undergo their first eye exam anytime between 6 and 9 months of age. Earlier, if you notice anything unusual or disconcerting.

The second eye exam should be scheduled between the ages of 2 and 5 years. At this time, other than visual acuity testing (sharpness and clarity of vision), we will test for binocular vision, eye alignment, refraction, and eye health.

From the ages of 6 to 19, children should see an optometrist every year. Childhood myopia, or nearsightedness, is on the rise and appears most often in this age group. As a result, eyeglasses and contact lenses are commonly prescribed at this age to neutralize the effects of myopia.

Children 19 and under are covered under OHIP for a routine eye exam by an optometrist once every 12 months, plus any follow-up assessments that may be required.
