When high blood glucose levels damage the blood vessels in the retina, they can swell and leak blood or fluid into the retina, in a condition called diabetic retinopathy. If not detected, diagnosed, and treated early, it can lead to serious loss of vision. However, with early detection, timely treatment, and appropriate follow-up care, studies show there is a 95% reduced risk of vision loss.
Diabetic macular edema develops when fluid builds up in the macula, the part of the retina responsible for central vision, and causes swelling and blurry vision. If untreated, diabetic macular edema can lead to permanent vision loss.
