Dr. Alvin Yang

Dr. Alvin Yang was born and raised in Toronto. Growing up, he had a very close relationship with his grandparents and they instilled a foundation of values and purpose in him. Dr. Yang knew he wanted to serve the community in some way, shape or form. In fact, his first summer job was working as an activity aid in the Alzheimer’s ward of a retirement home. There, he discovered his passion and calling for patient care. He followed this passion and a decade later he graduated from the prestigious University of Waterloo Optometry program. Dr. Yang is TPA-certified and has specialty interests in dry eye therapy, senior eye care, and paediatrics.

In his down time, Dr. Yang enjoys weight training, restaurant hopping, and singing. In his second year of optometry school, he competed in an international singing competition in Hong Kong and almost signed with a record label. Dr. Yang also has an Instagram channel in which he posts eye health-related videos @singingeyedoctor.

Dr. Yang is an active Canadian Association of Optometrists, Ontario Association of Optometrists, College of Optometrists of Ontario. Check out his latest involvement here and here.

Dr. Janice Hui

Dr. Janice Hui graduated from the University of Waterloo Optometry program and during her training, she developed an interest in binocular vision and vision therapy. Following graduation, she decided to move to Florida to complete a residency in pediatrics and primary care at Nova Southeastern University. There she gained extensive clinical experience and also actively participated in different optometry meetings doing poster presentations.

Dr. Hui loves to travel and try different cuisines. In her down time, she likes to keep active and enjoys doing yoga and going hiking.

Dr. Hui is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry and she is a member of the Canadian Association of Optometrists and College of Optometrists of Ontario.

Dr. Jessica Tran

Born and raised in Toronto, Dr. Jessica Tran completed her Honours Bachelor of Science at the University of Toronto, where she was an orientation leader and assisted her student council in fundraisers and student events. Continuing her passion for community service while attending the New England College of Optometry in Boston, MA, she was the co-president of Lions Club, executive member of Student Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity (SVOSH), and travelled to the Dominican Republic to provide eye exams to underserved areas.

During her leisure time, Dr. Tran enjoys spending time with family and her dog, travelling, cooking, and discovering new places to eat.

Dr. Tran is board certified in both Canada and USA, and her affiliations include the College of Optometrists of Ontario, Ontario Association of Optometrists (OAO) and Canadian Association of Optometrists (CAO). She is bilingual in Vietnamese and has working proficiency in Cantonese. Her interests center around dry eyes, therapeutic contact lens and ocular disease management.

Dr. Karen Truong

Dr. Karen Truong obtained her Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Toronto and then attended the New England College of Optometry in Boston, Massachusetts where she graduated with her Doctorate of Optometry. She completed her externships at a variety of clinical sites, including the Manchester VA Medical Center in New Hampshire where she concentrated on the treatment and management of eye diseases. Dr. Truong’s other externships included primary eye care, pediatric eye exams, strabismus consultations, and specialty contact lens fittings. She is board certified to practice in both the USA and Canada. Her professional affiliations include the Canadian Association of Optometrists, Ontario Associations of Optometrists, and College of Optometrists of Ontario.

In her free time, Dr. Truong enjoys traveling, trying new foods, and spending time with her friends, family, and dog, Max.

Dr. Vivian Ly

Dr. Vivian Ly graduated from the New England College of Optometry in Boston, MA. There she completed externships in ocular disease, contact lenses and primary eye care including service for the LGBTQ community and patients with special needs. Dr. Ly enjoys seeing patients of all ages.

She strongly believes in the importance of patient education regarding visual and ocular health. Outside of the clinic, Dr. Ly enjoys discovering anything and everything within the Toronto food scene and cheering on the Toronto Raptors.

Dr. Ly is a member of the Ontario Association of Optometrists, Canadian Association of Optometrists and the College of Optometrists of Ontario.

Dr. Patrick Eng

Dr. Patrick Eng was born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba. When asked in kindergarten what he wanted to be when he grew up, he remembered answering “eye doctor”. As fate would have it, he went on to graduate from the University of Manitoba with his Bachelor of Science degree, then obtained his Optometry doctorate degree at the University of Waterloo. Optometry indeed turned out to be the perfect career match for him as he thoroughly enjoys connecting with patients and applying his expertise to bring out the best in their vision.

In his spare time, his happy place is playing badminton and spending quality time with his wife and daughter.

Dr. Gurjot Chahal

Dr. Gurjot Chahal was born and raised in Markham. She received her Honors Bachelor of Science degree in Health & Disease and Biology at the University of Toronto. She went on to complete her Doctor of Optometry degree at the New England College of Optometry in Boston, MA. During her externship year, she worked with renowned Optometrists in Boston MA, Newington CT and Beverly Hills CA. She enjoys primary eye care with an interest in dry eyes and ocular disease management.

In her spare time, Dr. Chahal enjoys traveling, watching Netflix, and keeping up with the latest research and treatment in eye care.

Dr. Chahal is board certified in both Canada and the USA. She is a member of the Ontario Association of Optometrists, Canadian Association of Optometrists and the College of Optometrists of Ontario.

Dr. Kristy Lam

Dr. Kristy Lam received both her Bachelor of Honours Science and Doctor of Optometry degree from the University of Waterloo where she graduated with Dean’s Honour. Dr. Lam completed a clinical externship at the Lexington Veteran Affairs Medical Center in Lexington, Kentucky where she gained extensive experience in diagnosing, counseling and managing ocular diseases such as cataracts, dry eye syndrome, diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, and glaucoma. As part of her clinical training, she also interned at primary care clinics in Markham, Mississauga and Waterloo, with training in pediatric exams, contact lens fitting, binocular vision, low vision and pre-operative and post-operative refractive surgery (LASIK) exams.

Dr. Lam had the privilege to participate in a volunteer eye care missions to Honduras, where they provided full ocular-visual assessments, dispensed donated spectacles and medications and arranged surgery for those in need of secondary care.  She also volunteered with Special Olympics Lions Club International Opening Eyes providing vision test for athletes. She hopes to continue to participate in eye care missions around the world.

Her clinical interest lies in providing full spectrum family vision care, especially paediatric eye care and diagnosing and managing of ocular diseases. Dr. Lam is certified to use of oral and ocular therapeutics to treat ocular disease. She is also able to provide eye examinations in English and Cantonese. She looks forward to improve quality of life of people through optimizing their vision and educating of eye health.

Dr. Kevin Tieu

Dr. Kevin Tieu, OD, BMSc received his Bachelor of Medical Science at University of Western Ontario and later obtained his Doctor of Optometry at the University of Waterloo School of Optometry and Vision Science.

Dr. Tieu received clinical training at leading eye clinics throughout urban and rural Ontario, including facilities in Newmarket, Leamington, Blenheim, Chatham-Kent, Windsor, and Wallaceburg. Because of his diverse training, Dr. Tieu is well-versed in current treatments for ocular conditions such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, cataracts, LASIK evaluation and dry eyes.

Dr. Tieu is passionate about patient education and discussing eye health. In his spare time, Dr. Tieu enjoys cooking, exploring new foods, hiking and photography.

Dr. Akemi Motomura

Dr. Akemi Motomura was born and raised in Scarborough. She received her Honours Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Science from the University of Guelph, and then went on to complete her Doctor of Optometry degree at the University of Waterloo. Dr. Motomura enjoys seeing patients of all ages and in all areas of optometry, but it was during optometry school that she developed her interest in myopia control. She hopes to spread the message that myopia control is important not only to prevent thick and expensive glasses, but most importantly to decrease the risk of potential serious eye conditions.

In her spare time, Dr. Motomura enjoys baking everything from cookies to pies and watching old episodes of How I Met Your Mother. She also loves spending time with her family, friends and her family greyhound, Darcy.

Dr. Motomura is a member of the Ontario Association of Optometrists, Canadian Association of Optometrists and the College of Optometrists of Ontario.
