Leave Dry Eyes In The Dust

Simply put, dry eye syndrome occurs when the eyes don’t receive or retain a sufficient amount of moisture. This can be due to a number of factors, including:

  • Complications from systemic diseases
  • Environmental factors, such as dry or dusty conditions
  • Normal aging of the eye and eyelids
  • Hormonal changes
  • Certain medications

How Do I Know If I Have Dry Eye Syndrome?

The symptoms of dry eyes are just that: consistently dry, scratchy, irritated eyes. However, in some cases, excessive tearing can occur due to the eyes’ natural reflex to protect and comfort themselves. Whatever your symptoms, it is important to book an appointment with us as soon as they appear.

Are Dry Eyes Curable?

Unfortunately, dry eye syndrome is usually chronic, which means it is not easily curable. However, with the help of our optometrists, dry eyes can be managed in a number of ways:

Over the counter eye drops such as artificial tears mimic the composition of your own natural tears and are available without a prescription. You can use them as recommended to lubricate your eyes.

Prescribed by your optometrist, medicated eye drops such as Restasis can stimulate tear production and restore the moisture balance to your tear film.

Another cause of dry eyes is rapid and premature drainage of tears through the ducts. Punctal plugs, small implants temporarily placed in your eyelid’s drainage ducts, slows the drainage of tears, allowing them to remain on the surface of the eye longer, therefore retaining moisture.

If you suffer from dry eyes, our optometrists may ask about your diet history and recommend the addition of omega 3’s, flax, fish, and nuts to your diet, as well as suggesting you consume more water.
