Fostering a Strong Connection Between the Eyes & Brain

The eyes and the brain need a strong connection to create visual skills you can rely on. However, when they don’t work together as a cohesive unit, your child can experience difficulties in various areas of life. It may be challenging for them to perform well in school due to poor visual skills

If your child is having trouble at school, while playing, or complaining of symptoms that could be attributed to vision problems, vision therapy may be able to help. Through specialized exercises and activities, vision therapy can improve reading comprehension, attention spans, and sports performance.

If you’re wondering what vision therapy can do for you or your child, please book an appointment.

What Will a Vision Therapy Program Include?

Vision therapy is a specialized program that focuses on strengthening the ocular muscles and the eyes’ ability to work together. It can be beneficial for individuals with vision problems that cannot be corrected with eyeglasses, contact lenses, or surgery alone.

Your vision therapy program will be developed to focus on your child’s specific issues. The program will likely involve the use of lenses, prisms, filters, and computer-assisted visual activities. Other devices, like metronomes, balance boards, and other non-computerized optical instruments may also be used, depending on the desired outcome.

There must be active participation and dedication from the patient for a vision therapy program to be successful. At Alluminate Eyecare, our staff will work to develop a plan that is accessible for any participant

How Does Vision Therapy Improve Visual Skills?

Vision therapy works in a way similar to how physical therapy exercises the body. The activities involve exercising the eyes and the parts of the brain that control vision to help the visual system correct itself.

The program involves specific exercises suited to your child that help strengthen their fundamental visual skills. Helping them enhance their optical system gives them the abilities necessary to succeed in school and sports. For many, a successful vision therapy program improves their reading, writing, focusing, and active participation in school.

When Does My Child Need Vision Therapy?

There are often telltale signs that your child may benefit from vision therapy. If you notice them exhibiting signs of discomfort or struggling with their vision, it’s always best to bring them in for an eye exam. If we feel vision therapy may be an appropriate treatment, we will discuss it with you.

Some common signs of a vision-related problem in your child include:

  • Skipping words or lines while reading
  • Confusing similar words, like “was” and “saw”
  • Confusing similar letters, like b, d, p, and q
  • Excessively rubbing the eyes
  • Closing one eye when reading or doing near work
  • Holding books very close to the face
  • Tilting the head when reading
  • Discomfort or headaches from schoolwork or computer use
  • Difficulty with reading comprehension
  • Blurred or double vision when reading
  • Avoiding homework or other activities that require focus
  • Poor attention span
  • Trouble sitting still

If you would like to explore vision therapy as a treatment for your child, we would love to help. Please book an appointment or give us a call for more information!
